Meet the Governors

Meet the governors at NBJS

Who are the Governors of North Baddesley Juniors?

James Child (Co-opted) Chair of Governors

I have lived in the Romsey area for over 10 years now, having moved to North Baddesley in 2015 with my wife Ruth and two children. Prior to living in the area I spent a couple of years in Milton Keynes and before that I grew up in and around West Yorkshire.

My background is in construction, having graduated from the University of Leeds in 2004 with a Master’s degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. I currently manage a team of  estimators for a Tier 1 building contractor locally, and I'm also a Chartered Construction Manager through the Chartered Institute of Building. I have spent nearly 20 years working on a wide range of multimillion projects at tender stage, including the bid for the extension to our own school for a company who didn't ultimately win the bid! I bring a career in cost and project management to the governing body, as well as having an interest in estates management and building maintenance.

Outside of work I am currently the Group Scout Leader in North Baddesley and until recently the Assistant District Commissioner for Beaver Scouts in Romsey. I am a keen rugby union fan, having climbed the county ladder in my youth, and like to swim, run and go for walks when I manage to get some time spare!

Vicki Rowlands  (Staff Governor)

I have been a staff governor for the past few years. One of my key roles is to provide a link between staff and governors as well as giving a staff perspective on issues discussed. I enjoy being actively involved in decisions made in order to continue to move the school forward. I feel that my role is key as I am fully involved with the day to day running of the school and as Assistant Headteacher am well placed to give a schools view point on a wide range of issues. I thoroughly enjoy my role as a governor as it enables me to be involved in a different aspect of school life.

Lucy Wootten (Head teacher)

As Head teacher I have the responsibility of running the school on behalf of the Governors. I work alongside the Governors to implement government policy and ensure the quality of the education that the children receive. Governors provide valuable skills to help improve the school - as a team we continually strive to ensure the best outcomes for all of the children at NBJS. I have loved every minute of my time at our school; as a class teacher, a senior leader and now the Headteacher. I can assure you that our school will provide the best possible education, outcomes and experiences for your children. I am dedicated to building opportunities for children to achieve the highest academic standards, ensuring that they are well known as individuals and their unique personalities, talents and interests are nurtured and developed to the full.

Chris Mahoney (Co-opted) Vice Chair of Governors

I moved to North Baddesley with my wife a number of years ago to be near our daughter and grandchildren. My eldest granddaughter is a former pupil and my youngest is a current pupil of the school.

I am a retired businessman. In my career I have managed organisations in the Chemical, Flavour & Food Ingredients, Office Products and Golf sectors. This has included responsibility for operations throughout the UK & Ireland, Mainland Europe, India and Asia, I was also based in the USA for a short period. I am a professionally qualified accountant being a retired fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants. Towards the end of my career I spent 8 years as a Trustee/Director of a charity that offered free and confidential support, information and counselling to young people (13-25).

I am delighted to join the board of governors of North Baddesley Junior School. Throughout my career I was passionate about creating an environment in which everyone could achieve their full potential and will use this philosophy together with my business experience and skill set to support the school’s continual successful evolution.

Mike Hiscock (Co-opted)

I am married and have lived in the village since 1983. Our 2 daughters also live locally and were pupils at both the Infant and Junior schools. 5 of our 7 grandchildren are of school age and are also pupils across the schools.

I am a qualified Personnel Professional and was a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. I had a varied and rewarding career as a manager at British Telecom. My managerial experience covers a range of disciplines from contracts management, Estates Management to HR and Management Development.

I first became a school governor in 1986 and served at a secondary school in Southampton for 8 years until my work at BT required me to work away from home. Following voluntary redundancy from BT in 1998, I was employed by Hampshire County Council as a Governor Services Co-ordinator and in this role I trained, supported and advised governors and served on a number of governing bodies. In all of this time I had never had the opportunity to support ‘my local schools’ and on my retirement, I wanted to put this right! I have been a member of the Infant school governing body since 2015 and I am delighted to have joined the Junior school as a co-opted governor and look forward to supporting the school and its pupils over the years to come.

Rachel Newton-Jones (Parent Governor)

I moved with my family to Rownhams in 2019 after having lived my whole life in Maybush, so am a local to the area.  I am married to Paul and we have three children.  My daughter is at secondary school, my eldest son is at North Baddesley Junior School and my youngest son at North Baddesley Infant School.

I am a Chartered Accountant and studied at Kingston University where I went on to teach for two years immediately after graduating.  I then joined PwC on their graduate programme and have been there for 17 years.  The first 13 years of my career were spent providing external audit, internal audit and advisory services to not for profit, government and public sector clients.  I then spent two years within our firmwide people team where my team was responsible for the firm's talent and performance strategy.  I am now in the Audit Learning and Development team where I manage relationships with our strategic stakeholders in the business to ensure that the training on my programmes meets our regulatory requirements and the needs of the business.

I bring financial and people expertise as well as my 'auditors nose' and most importantly my desire to do a really good job and make a difference to the children at North Baddesley Junior School.
