What is P4C?
Philosophy for Children is a philosophical approach to learning and teaching and is an inclusive and adaptable pedagogy which focuses on meeting the needs of the learners, whilst developing higher level thinkers and questioners.
P4C explores concepts (big ideas) that arise in all areas of life and education and encourages students to use philosophical dialogue and enquiry based practice to help children think, speak, listen and work together more effectively and collaboratively.
P4C is not a stand alone subject, yet a method of teaching that is woven across the full curriculum underpinning our regular classroom practice within North Baddesley Junior School. Classroom enquiries involve sharing a stimulus, identifying concepts- such as difference, war, equality, leadership and courage- and formulating questions that help to explore a variety of avenues linked to the big idea. With the support of a teacher as the facilitator, pupils delve into the proposed questions to deepen their own understanding, aiming to develop their thinking skills: critical, caring, collaborative and creative thinking.
