Victorian Days
We immersed the children in a Victorian lifestyle with two Victorian Days. On the first day, the children took part in a Railway Debate, in which each child took the role of someone affected by the development of the Great Western Railway. Engineers and builders argued for the railway, whilst landowners and farmers argued against.
On the second Victorian Day, the children experienced school life as a Victorian child. In the morning, they used blackboards and chalk in class, recited their times tables together, experienced 'drill' (the Victorian predecessor to PE), and were 'put to work', sewing. After a Victorian lunch that had been packed at home so that it only contained ingredients available in Victorian times, the children experienced a Victorian playtime, made a Victorian toy and created their own Victorian-style Wanted Posters of themselves.
Many of the children commented afterwards that they had enjoyed the days, even if they had been shocked by what Victorian children had had to deal with every day!
